How To Measure Water Volume

As a responsible swimming pool owner you should know exactly how much water volume your swimming pool holds in able to ensure that the chemicals in your pool are properly balanced and that the pool filter is clearing the water without getting backed up.

In able to determine the water volume of your pool, you need to know the dimensions of the pool and the pool's shape. Below you will find a forulma and chart that will help you determine your pools' water volume.

Calculate Your Swimming Pool's Water Volume:

How to determine how many gallons of water your pool holds.

Here is the formula:

Length * Width * Average Depth * Multiplier = Gallons

Multiplier Needed:

Rectangle, Square, or Free-Form Pool: Multiplier = 7.5

Round or Oval Pool: Multiplier = 5.9

Determine the Average Depth:

To determine the average depth in a pool where the bottom slopes, measure the shallow end, the deep end depth.
Add them together and divide by two (2).

Example: Shallow End = 2 feet. Deep End = 8 feet 2' + 8' = 10'; 10/2 = 5 Feet Average Depth

How to Measure Water Volume

Unfortunately, your pool will probably experience a leak sometime during its life. These problems can be more than just an inconvenience. An un-repaired hole the size of a pencil tip can result in hundreds of gallons of water lost per day. In addition to the replacement cost of the water, leaks in your swimming pool will increase chemical demands, and may lead to more serious structural and mechanical problems. Below we have also included the "bucket test." This is a simple test that you can perform to help you determine if your pool is leaking or just evaporating.

  • Place a 5 gallon bucket of water on the top step of the pool.
  • Put enough water in the bucket to keep it from floating away.
  • Mark the level of the water inside the bucket with a marker or black electrical tape and mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
  • Allow the pool to operate normally for 24 hours. Then check both water levels.

Ideally, both water levels will be where they were the day before. If the water inside the bucket is lower, then some evaporation occurred and the pool water level should be down the same amount. If the pool water level is down more than the water level inside the bucket, the pool has a leak in it.
